VAN HEERDEN SAFARIS...

Hunting Areas of Van Heerden Safaris

Eastern AreasPrint Version of Eastern Area Info & Packages

Our main hunting area is 3 hours drive east of Windhoek, Namibia’s bustling capital city.  The areas comprise of bush-covered plains with the Epukiro Omuramba to the north and the more open semi desert to the south at the Black Nossob River. The Wunderland cattle ranch comprises of 6 850 ha (16 850 acres) and in close vicinity,VHSafhave various other hunting rights on private owned land, totaling 21 000 ha (51 930 acres).
All farms have five metal strand fences, which only prevent cattle from moving freely. The majority of the area has no high game proof fences to prevent game from roaming free. The vegetation is on average medium density. Grasslands covered with short brush, huge Acacia Erioloba trees and patches of dense Acacia Mellifera, where kudu and oryx like to lie up during the hottest period of the day. Here large populations of southern greater kudu, grey bush duiker, steenbok, warthog, caracal, cheetah, with big herds of oryx / gemsbok and red hartbeest roam free. Small herds of springbok occur and blue wildebeest move seasonally through the concession areas.  Further to the east an isolated population of burchell’s zebra occurs.  On game proof fenced ranches a wider variety of game species is available in the area.

Here herds of oryx and springbok roam. Excellent kudu, steenbok and grey bush duiker trophies are harvested each year. With a strike of luck you might even stumble upon the odd big warthog, leopard, brown hyena or caracal. In game-proof fenced areas blesbok and black wildebeest are available.
One day excursions or over night fly camps are used to hunt in these areas (21 050 ha / 52 000 acres, not all bordering each other). Ranch style accommodation, with well placed outside guest facilities (2x double room, sharing a bathroom) are available in one area.

Khomas Hochland

In the beautiful mountainous Khomas Hochland, with its spectacular views, is home to the Hartmann’s mountain zebra.  One of Africa’s highlights is most certainly hunting the mountain zebra on foot in the mountains.  Here,VHSafhas once more secured hunting rights on various top class private properties.  The main area, consisting of 11 600 ha (28 560 acres), is situated 40 miles west of Windhoek.  An additional 24 280 ha (60 000 acres), scattered throughout the Khomas Hochland’s mountains, is available to us, especially for hunting leopard.  All the properties have stock proof fencing, so the herds of zebra and oryx can roam free.  Stock proof fence (1,2 m / 4 foot is standard for cattle farmers) is no hindrance for kudu, which in one leap can clear a fence up to 2 m / 6,5 foot high.  Fresh signs of leopard, cheetah and hyena are seen regularly, with a sighting of these shy animals not ruled out.  The king of the stones, the little klipspringer, is regularly sighted but quotas are strictly controlled by the Ministry of Environment and Tourism.
Accommodation is Namibian ranch style, in a comfortable guest facility away from the main farmhouse (2x double room, sharing one bathroom and toilet + 2x double room, sharing one bathroom and toilet). Fly camps are used in the more remote areas. top

Bushmanland AreasPrint Version of Bushmanland Info & Package

The challenge is to make a quick, perfect placed shot at short range. After hours of tracking with traditional Bushman trackers trough the soft white sand in the dense Terminalia and Acacia bush of the north eastern parts of Namibia it is one of the most rewarding hunts.  Walking for hours on a set of tracks that started at a waterhole before sunrise is an opportunity to learn much of the animal’s behavior that made the tracks in the sand.  Old kudu bulls, from years of hiding in the thick brush, grey bush duiker, warthog and steenbok are encountered on the eland tracks.  Here many properties are game proof fenced and a wider variety of game species is available on such ranches.
Permanent structures on ranches, with all the necessary luxuries, or fly camps are used on these hunts to accommodate guests.  A minimum of six hunting days is needed for such a hunt.
~ Bushmanland Communal Area: As an extra excursion, over night camping trips can be arranged to visit the traditional Bushman villages in Bushmanland.

Damaraland Communal Concessions
Print Version of Damaraland Info & Packages

Namibia undoubtedly has to be called one of Africa’s greatest and scenic hunting destinations.
Since 1997 a number of communal conservancies have been registered under conservancy legislation of Namibia, which allows communal area residents to reap income from their wildlife.

Damaraland is situated in the north-western side of Namibia. Cut from east to west by ancient dry river courses, some of glacial origin, creating deep canyons. These riverbeds are lined with thorny acacia trees forming linear oases in the desert. Providing a lifeline of survival for a host of unexpected animals, including desert-dwelling elephant and rare black rhino.

VHSafholds the hunting rights in two communal concession areas in Damaraland, Huab Conservancy and Sorris-Sorris Conservancy, situated 80 km (50 miles) apart and totaling 320 000 ha.
Accommodation is in a temporary tented camp. Sturdy camping beds with comfortable mattresses, hot water for a shower after a long day’s hard hunting and a freshly cooked meal on an open fire is just some of the luxuries to be enjoyed in the desert.
Clients hunting on communal conservancies in Namibia can be assured that significant portions of their payments are being ploughed back into wildlife conservation efforts that are not only promoting the long-term welfare of Namibia’s wildlife, but also creating strong linkages between rural communities and the values they are placing on their wildlife resources.

SORRIS-SORRIS CONSERVANCY

The red sand dunes start to break up and become interspersed with hills to the west and granite gravel outcrops to the north. Colors and contours collide, and nowhere more magnificently than at Brandberg Mountain to the south. Amongst the rocky crevices are thousands of bushman rock paintings of which the “White Lady” is the best known. To the north at Burnt Mountain is the geological curiosity known as the Organ Pipes, silent masses of basalt rising up in perpendicular patterns and colors. The slopes at Twyfelfontein are one of the richest collections of stone-age rock engravings in Africa.
The VHSaf quota includes Hartmann’s Mountain Zebra, Ostrich, Chacma Baboon various record book quality Klipspringer, Steenbok, Oryx, Springbok and Southern Greater Kudu. Leopard, Hyena and desert dwelling Elephant are also one quota, depending on availability.

HUAB CONSERVANCY

The unbelievable scenic Huab area is mountainous with little roads and many big dry river beds lined with old trees. Hunting the steep slopes on food provides for excellent hunting experiences and requires a high level of fitness! The western part of the Huab area flattens gradually off into gravel plains and provides a great habitat for many herds of Springbok totaling in to the thousands.
The VHSaf quota includes Hartmann’s Mountain Zebra, Ostrich, Black-Backed Jackal, Chacma Baboon, various record book quality Klipspringer, Steenbok, Oryx, Springbok and Southern Greater Kudu. Hyena and desert dwelling Elephant are also one quota, depending on availability.
